Logan's Updates

11/30/2009: Logan has made an incredible recovery and is feeling great now. He went to school for most of the day today and is looking wonderful. This picture was taken on Thanksgiving night when he was very optimistically trying to have some turkey.

11/28/2009: After what could only be called the worst Chemo week ever… we are all very thankful.

Logan, in his usual style of taking all of this with great strength and grace, finished up his long week last night with a much needed blood transfusion. He was transfused for four hours after Chemo ended and stood up, put on his coat and hat and hugged his nurses goodnight and thanked them for staying late with us. We were all shocked at his sweet nature even after the day he had. We were the last four people on the ward and they were teary watching his slow exit. But, we limped home on physical and emotional fumes and have spent much of today re-charging our batteries. It was his most substantial transfusion to date and although I am praying that he never has to have another ‘double-double’ transfusion, last night he finally got some rest and he is feeling much better now.

We hope you are all doing well and have had a great Thanksgiving. We will try to get some pictures up soon.

11/18/2009: Today Logan took the bus to school bright and early, had a great day there AND without a single visit to the nurse for Tylenol, and rode the bus home. We are celebrating here! This is the first time he has had such a good day since…first grade. Yeah Logan!! This is him swinging and telling us about his great day.

11/14/2009: After four straight days of rain (that wouldn't go away) we are up and running again. We are very fortunate to have no wind or rain damage to the house and we are coming away from this storm with a renewed appreciation for household electricity. Logan was very nervous during the storm, he found it too loud and really doesn't ever want to hear the wind howling outside again. Otherwise he is feeling great and has had good energy. As a new step toward feeling 'normal' he met with the home-bound teacher a few times this week. He has a new teacher that is very kind and they had some much needed make-up work classes. He is now feeling optimistic and ready to go back to school this week. :) In this picture he is happily modeling a new knitted cap that our friend Catherine made for him. You can see from his expression that he loves it!

11/06/2009: Today was the end of a LONG chemo week. Daybreak found us in route to the clinic, we got an early start in hopes of finishing in time to get to Logan's school for the Citizen of the Month Ceremony. Logan was the October Citizen of the Month in his class, October's characteristic was diligence. Each month the school highlights a characteristic and teaches about the merits of developing strong character. We got finished with Chemo just minutes before the ceremony and Logan bravely wore his IV hydration pump to school. His principal and vice-principal were very happy to see him, in this picture he is getting his certificate and congratulatory hugs.

11/03/2009: Logan had a better day today, his hospital time was much shorter and he got see this really cool cruise ship on the way home. Yesterday was a terribly long day with over ten hours spent at the hospital, the day ended with a transfusion and he is feeling much better today because he had blood yesterday. To his delight this huge Crown Princess was docked at Waterside and they got to pull over and see it on the way home this evening.

11/01/2009: After another week of ups and downs I declared this a “fun” weekend. Logan has had good energy and was ready to blow off some steam before this Chemo-week starts. His Thursday and Friday doctor visits showed good blood counts and resulted in him getting two flu shots. He has now been vaccinated against the seasonal flu and the H1N1 Swine version, one in each arm in what he called a “terrible sneak attack!” we agreed but that was how his doctor said it needed to happen. We then had our meeting about the new drug trial, we were given a whole lot of very complicated information about… all of the complicated variables in choosing the people that these drugs are tested on, and we don’t fit the criteria at this time. We are disappointed, but Logan didn’t know that we were applying for the trail so he wasn’t fazed by the news. His doctor thinks that we are on a steady path right now and we are choosing to believe her as best we can, we will continue to watch for new treatments out there but in the mean time he is stable.
We will go in tomorrow and start Chemo-round four out of at least 14, (and we are trying not to be overwhelmed by that new number). I am trying to recapture my will to type, and I’ll endeavor to put up more frequent updates. We will happily take any prayers, positive thoughts and well wishes you want to send this way.
Here’s what we got into on our “fun weekend!” On Friday afternoon we picked Emily up from school and went to the ocean-front to take advantage of low winter rates at the hotel where we spent Logan’s birthday. It was wonderful! We had the place to ourselves and spent the evening on the ‘Lazy River’, it is a circular swimming pool with a current that lets you ride along on a pool noodle or inner-tube and relax. We called in a few friends and Logan thought it was his birthday all over again, they played and had a wonderful time. In this picture he is taking a break with his friend August. In the next picture he is dressed for some trick or treating, he was a skeleton, his friend Penie was a cat and his dad broke out the dragon costume for some trick-or treat fun. The dragon has been lurking around our street on and off for about 17 Halloweens now. This year we had a young lady bring her little one by to see the beast that scared her when she was little. It was a nice night and Logan walked two streets and was done, he was still tired from the lazy river and we called it a night. His spirits are high and his batteries are charged for the week ahead.
