Logan's Updates

09/07/2010: Today was another GREAT day! Logan popped out of bed with a huge smile on his face and went happily out to the bus for the first day of 3rd grade. It was strangely quiet while he was gone but he made up for it when he came home and excitedly told us how much he loves his new class and seeing his old friends and teachers. He did his homework while chattering on about how he even enjoyed the chicken sandwich we had for lunch! We are so happy to have him back with his friends and excited about learning again. Thank you everyone at Bayside for making him feel missed and for welcoming him back so warmly!

09/30/2009: Today Logan went to school for half the day and needed to come home for some R & R. We watched him for a while then called the home-care nurse to do a check-up and some lab work. When the results came in there were some very low blood counts, so… he will be having a blood transfusion in the morning. In typical Logan style he caught a second wind and went on with the evening like he didn’t have a care in the world. He even managed to go to Cub Scouts and have some fun afterward with his friend Penie Cupcakes. This is the jack-o-lantern they carved together.

09/29/2009: Wow, yesterday was a big day for our family. I'm happy to report that Emily took her DVM learners permit test, passed and started driving on the way home. Whew! She is (even more) ready to take on the world now. And Logan had a full day at school and felt good about that, he didn’t make a whole day today but this is a time that his blood counts are very low and we are proud of him for staying at school as long as he did. He came home to a wonderful package from our Southwest family and it really turned his day around. Thank you all for all of the support! This picture was taken as she waited impatiently for her name to be called to take her test.

09/27/2009: Logan worked hard this summer and completed the 'God and Me' Cub Scout Series. This morning we went to church and he was awarded his 'God and Me Pin', he is very proud of it. He is a tired little man today, this is a time that his blood is working overtime to recover from the Chemo last week. He is determined to go the Children's Hospital Cancer Kid's picnic today at the Virginia Living Museum, so we are going to try it. It's hard to say no to the fun things right now.

09/26/2009: Logan has had a great day. He has had good energy and a great appetite. It was cool here today and that was nice for some outside play time at our neighborhood ‘end of summer’ picnic. This picture was taken as we dropped off his sister and her friends at a birthday party.

09/25/2009: Today we ended this long Chemo week with a blood transfusion and a hot bubble bath. Whew, it's good to have this week behind us! Logan did great, he spent a lot of energy staying hydrated enough for treatment, that was his biggest obstacle this time. He has kept his positive attitude and is having a hot bath right now to celebrate his IV removal. This is another picture from last weekend at the go-kart track.

09/23/2009: Over the weekend we took Logan to the beach go-kart track and he had a great time. We try really hard to get some good times in before Chemo week starts. This has been an okay first half of Chemo week, today has gone rather slowly and he will be even more tired this evening. He still has his positive attitude; he has played with and harassed the nurses all day. They are wonderful people!

09/19/2009: This picture shows two things we see so often with Logan. It shows a dreaded and sad event and Logan smiling through it. He had a good day yesterday until evening came and he realized that his hair had let go. We hopped in the car and got it buzzed with no fanfare this time. He is okay with it but not looking forward to going back to school wearing his hat. He asked to put it on the website so that none of his friends would be shocked to see him next Monday. He is such a trooper!

09/17/2009: Logan has had great improvement in his blood counts and his lab reports show that he is right on track to start Chemo on Monday. He is doing well with school and has gone all day, every day this week (except Monday which was spent inpatient). Tonight we went to his school open house and PTA meeting, he was excited to have the vice-principal ask him to start the meeting by leading the school in The Pledge of Allegiance. He did a great job, we are very proud of him

09/15/2009: Today Logan woke up around 10am and begged to go to school…so he did and he had an okay day. He has felt great this evening he was thrilled to have an afterschool visit with August and a game of Star Wars Monopoly with his dear friend Jerry. Thank you all for the support and prayers you’ve been sending our way.

09/14/2009: Whew! Everything is okay now but last night was a hard night. Logan went to bed early and woke up a few hours later with a high fever and we had to rush him to the ER. He started at 103' around 10pm and it took until 6am to get his fever to break and his blood pressure to rise to an acceptable level. He is feeling good now, he was treated with high dose antibiotics and we will be watching him carefully until he has had 24 fever free hours. Oddly his doctor says that I should keep him away from everyone and everything until 6am tomorrow and if he is fever and pain free then I should send him right out to school. The jury is still out on that...after a night like last night I am seriously considering an industrial strength plastic bubble for him. I took this picture this afternoon after he had rested up and was counting down his last three hours of observation and fluids. He is quite a trooper, he was informed that he had to sit up, eat and drink to get to go home, so he sat up and made decorations for a project at CHKD and seemed to enjoy himself.

09/13/2009: This has been a nice quiet weekend for Logan. He has gotten a fair amount of rest and is feeling really excited about going to school in the morning. He still has his hair and believes he is going to keep it until at least next Monday when he starts round two of Chemo. His spirits are admirably high.
This picture was taken last week when our very dear friend Cynthia came in from FL for a visit. Given an opportunity she would really spoil my kids, they loved having her here.

09/09/2009: Logan had another good day at school. He is a very happy 2nd grader!

Today's picture was taken of the Southwest Airlines “Symbols of Freedom” display at the airport in Baltimore. This display was put together for a companywide 4th of July gate decorating contest. The display featured our American Flag, the flag of each branch of our Military, copies of our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, Star Spangled Banner, an American Eagle and The Statue of Liberty (in the likeness of Colleen). The display took first place and since then the bell has gone from Baltimore to Dallas, TX where it will be on permanent display at the SWA Headquarters. Today it was introduced to the company on the Southwest Airlines website, and this link will take you to a picture of Logan with SWA CEO Gary Kelly and the write up about it, if you are interested go to www.blogsouthwest.com .

09/08/2009: He stayed at school the whole day and came home happy and STARVING! Thank you all for the prayers that made this possible.

09/08/2009: With a HUGE smile on his face and a backpack so crammed full of school supplies that he could hardly lift it....Logan started school today! It was raining and ugly outside but he was thrilled to wait in the rain for his bus. I heard little voices from the back call his name as he ran up the bus steps.

09/02/2009: Today’s Chemo went better than the past two days (by far!). We’re happy to report that he has had minimal nausea this evening and even talked me into letting him have an illegal bubble bath. Tomorrow will be another long day; he is scheduled for an after-Chemo CT scan and breathing treatment. All told he is doing very well. He even picked new pictures and told me what to write on the updated home page introduction. I think this picture is worth a thousand happy words!
